Day 98, 365 It’s time to go creature comforts

I’m here at the cottage enjoying solar heat.

When I arrived yesterday the furnace wasn’t making a sound and it has taken me until today to arrange for the oil company to come for the necessary repairs. Flicking the restart button didn’t solve the problem.

So what does this have to do with lettingofstuff? For me it’s about letting go of presuming that the care of my creature comforts is on automatic pilot. I’m not ready to let go of them entirely, but living in a 45 degree house in late November helps me appreciate the 65 degrees that I obliviously enjoy daily. I have renewed gratitude for the electric blanket that served me well last night, as well as for this morning’s freshly brewed coffee. This is not a Hurricane Sandy situation.

Day 97, 365 It’s time to go… to Maine

Today I let go of all the busyness of hearth and holiday and pack my few bags and headed for my cottage by the sea in Maine. I travel light, usually with only three ‘satchels’ —a cooler, a bag for books, a tote for clothes and sundries, and a backpack for my computer. Today, because I’m just getting settle up here for the winter, I filled a paper bag as well.
This feels like I’m lettingofstuff because it’s all I need. I could live light; in fact I do when I’m here. I love the silence, solitude and simplicity of it all. (If you want to know more about that, check out my blog, www.acottagebythesea.net.)

Day 96, 365 It’s time to go, turkey

After spending most of the day organizing the Thanksgiving turkey, I’m finally getting around to blogging. I have let go of the carcass and all that was on it. After taking most of the meat off the bone, my intention was to make turkey broth,  In a big pot I covered the carcass with water and voila, a couple of hours later I had broth with enough hunks of turkey to make a hefty turkey soup just by adding noodles, carrots and green beans. A turkey version of my comfort chicken soup.
Alas, I didn’t take any pictures along the way. Maybe eating turkey made me too sleepy. But come to think of it, I’m sure you all can picture what I’m talking about. I bet something similar went on in your kitchen today. All I have is a picture of the final project.

Day 95, 365 It’s time to go, toys and games

We took the bags, stuffed with stuff fro the put-and-take, to my niece’s yesterday. Best estimate is that we came back with about half.

This weekend my husband will resort it once again; the good stuff to Good Will, the useless stuff to the dump. This doesn’t seem like a simple project to me, but once the bags get out of my truck, I’ll be able to let go of it all.
